This is how you effectively protect yourself against the coronavirus

The corona virus has now also reached Germany. These tips will really protect you and others from contracting the dangerous lung disease. Plus: what you can do in case of suspicion

The coronavirus, scientifically called SARS-CoV-2, has been spreading from China since December and also has Germany firmly under control. The fear of being infected with the dangerous virus that causes lung diseases remains high even in times of stagnating infection rates. Not everything that is supposed to help prevent infection is actually effective. We explain what really protects you from infection.

What is SARS-CoV-2?

SARS-CoV-2 belongs to the coronavirus family, named after the serrated structure of the virus, which is reminiscent of a crown or a wreath. Since it is closely related to the SARS virus has broken out in 2002, says Sars Co rona v irus-2. If viruses get into the human organism, they can cause various diseases, from a harmless cold to severe, potentially fatal pneumonia. The triggered by the SARS-CoV-2 lung disease is Covid-19 : Co Rona Vi rus D isease 19 (19 after the year of the first occurrence 2019).

Tip: If you are out and about and have the feeling that you have come into contact with viruses but do not have the opportunity to wash your hands, a hand disinfectant can protect you from an infection – including the “normal” flu viruses, by the way.

How is the coronavirus transmitted?

As far as we know today, coronaviruses are first transmitted from animals to humans. It is now certain that the new virus can also be transmitted directly from person to person. SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted through a droplet infection, for example when an infected person sneezes or coughs up. There are increasing signs that infection is also possible via oral-focal smear infection. This can happen, for example, if you touch a door handle that an infected person has just operated.

What are the symptoms of Covid-19?

The symptoms are similar to the flu. “Like other respiratory pathogens, an infection with the novel coronavirus can lead to symptoms such as coughing, runny nose, sore throat and fever, and some people also suffer from diarrhea,” the RKI informs. In rare, severe cases, it can lead to difficulty breathing and pneumonia.
